UNEARTHED: Hunt Residencies Cohort VIII
Hunt Gallery proudly presents UNEARTHED, the culminating exhibition of Hunt Residencies Cohort VIII, marking the completion of their six-month residency.
At its core, UNEARTHED is about what lies beneath the layers of process, identity, and emotion that each artist brings to light through their practice. Across mediums, these seven artists engage in acts of excavation: of self, of memory, of form.
Sabrina Parsons paints with immediacy and motion, propelled by innate speed and a neutral, open-ended approach that invites multiple ways of seeing. Her intuitive works act like Rorschach tests, encouraging projection and interpretation as she moves quickly through layers, allowing “little monsters” and shifting forms to emerge.
Naija Boles reveals the pulse of life within paint, large gestures, and movement, exploring the delicate balance between holding on and letting go. His work captures transformation as both a process and a presence, reflecting the rhythm of life itself.
Andrea Wenglowskyj combines photography, collage, and embroidery to examine generational archives of Ukrainian heritage, memory, and female archetypes. Her work illuminates resilient cultural histories, giving new visibility to traditions while exploring the complexities of identity, femininity, and heritage.
Quaid Baker uses crisp cut-paper forms to strip imagery to its essence. Drawing on universally recognized societal icons, his work plays on interpretation and ambiguity while carrying humor and humility, asking the viewer to consider: is this a rich person’s backyard or a trailer park?
Nia Jael Bronner combines acrylic paint and beadwork to celebrate the choice to create for oneself, uncovering the joy, purpose, and possibility of claiming one’s truth. Her practice affirms self-determination and invites viewers to share in the celebration of being.
Shelby Kittinger reflects the authenticity of emotion through cut-and-sew techniques, layering painted fragments of self and influence. Her work explores the intersection of nature and nurture, the inherited and the self-fashioned, and the ways personal experience shapes identity.
Sarah Sonnenburg merges feminine figures, flora, and landscape in lush oil paintings that explore growth, belonging, and interconnectedness. Her work draws on classical painterly traditions while reflecting cycles of personal and collective transformation.
Together, these works form a collective testament to what can surface when artists are given time, space, and community to dig deeply into who they are and what they are becoming. The resulting exhibition is both deeply personal and collectively resonant, shaped by the presence of peers and the conversations that unfold within the studio. UNEARTHED becomes a meditation on transformation, revelation, and the power of art to dig beneath the surface of both self and society.
Cohort IX will move into their studios downstairs to round out a wonderful evening of accomplishments and new beginnings. Please welcome: Quincy Koczka, Amy Capalbo, Victoria May, Westley Olmsted, Shanel Kerekes, Sarah Barry, and Yames Moffit.
