Anything Can Happen Here
MFA Thesis Joey GoergenMay 3 1:57pm — May 24, 2024 1:57pm
Anything Can Happen Here Opens May 3rd from 5-9pm at Hunt Gallery In
Buffalo. This show is Joey Goergen’s MFA thesis show for the University At Buffalo.
The work included contains paintings with pastel colored backgrounds and shapes
forming put of the color fields.
The drawings and paintings act as a more free form and spontaneous response
of puzzling shapes and themes that come together as meditative abstractions. These
patterns made of triangular forms or flannel-shirt plaids act as a personal catalog of
imagery and pay homage to people who have passed from suicides and overdose.
These works act as intense meditation on themes of loss, grief, and an attempt to find
joy. The work is heavily influenced by punk music and the spaces the artist grew up
going to and where he met the people who inspired the works. The Colors are loud like
music from the scene and the compositions are busy and energetic like that of a show.
The work acts as the bridge between consciousness and story as they feel like a
memory being pulled to the surface as it becomes fully realized.
Joey is an artist from Buffalo New York. He attended the Cleveland Institute of Art
with his BFA in drawing and printmaking. He Is currently getting his masters at the
University at Buffalo. He has shown work at places like Seneca One as well MOCA
Cleveland. Goergen also has done design work for bands like Gatto Black and Sign
Language.
The C. Stuart and Jane H. Hunt Art Gallery was established in April 2022 with a clear
mission: to support and enhance the representation of artists in Western New York.
Located at the Historic Brisbane Building in downtown Buffalo, the Hunt Art Gallery has
become a vibrant cultural hub, offering bi-monthly exhibitions and events to the local
community.
