Kari Achatz
Kari Achatz is a mixed media artist and educator based in Buffalo, New York, where she lives and teaches at Nichols School. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Art Education with a minor in Painting from Daemen College in 2007, followed by a Master of Science in Art Education from SUNY Buffalo in 2011.
Achatz’s artistic practice centers around hand-cut, layered imagery. Works that explore the possibilities of removal and revelation. For her, to cut is not only to subtract, but also to expose, to let light in. She describes herself as an artist who draws with a blade, finding quiet beauty in the ordinary.
Her work has been exhibited widely throughout Western New York, including at CEPA Gallery, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, the Burchfield Penney Art Center, the Tower Gallery at Daemen College, and HUNT Gallery. She has also participated in the PLAY/GROUND art initiative in 2019 and 2020.
Achatz’s work is held in several notable collections, including the permanent collection of the Buffalo AKG, the Jeffrey Gundlach Collection, the Gerald Mead Collection, and numerous private collections throughout the United States.
